Lesson 6  Smash-and-grab

一、grab 非法牟取; ; 抓取; 抓扬

1、grab at抓住不放

The thief made a grab at my bag but I pushed him away.

小偷一把抓住了我的手提包,但我把他推开了。

2、grab off vt. 抢先获得(捷足先登)

 The prettiest girls at the dance were grabbed off for partners first.
舞会中最漂亮的女子都被抢先邀作舞伴。

He grabbed my collar and pulled me towards him.
他抓住我的领子把我拉倒他面前。

Let's grab a sandwich and go to see the film.
让我们赶快吃个三明治就去看电影吧。

二、The expensive shops in a famous arcade near Piccadilly were just opening.

1、arcade n. 拱廊,有拱廊的街道

2、There is an opening in the hedge.这篱笆上有个洞。

His opening remarks are applauded by the audience.他的开场白受到听众的鼓掌欢迎。

Thanks for opening my eyes.谢谢你告诉我真相。

三、At this time of the morning, the arcade was almost empty. Mr. Taylor, the owner of a jeweler shop was admiring a new window display.

1、admire羡慕(ad+mire惊奇→惊喜;羡慕)钦佩,叹赏  admirer 景慕者

She has many admirers.她有许多追求者。

I am not a great admirer of her work.我对她的工作不太欣赏。

admire for 欣赏某人的哪一个特质
I admire him for his perseverance . 我钦佩他的毅力。

A dmire sb for 因……佩服某人admire to do sth. (美口)很想做某事

respect and admire 信任;尊重

2、on display 展出

His paintings are on display at the exhibition.他的绘画正在展览会上展出。

四、 Two of his assistants had been working busily since 8 o'clock and had only just finished. Diamond necklaces and rings had been beautifully arranged on a background of black velvet. After gazing at the display for several minutes, Mr. Taylor went back into his shop.

1、 assistant形:助理的;辅助的名:助手助理;助教,店员

2、  arrange v. 安排,整理,排列n. 安排,排列

arrange for 为…做准备,安排

3、velvet 丝绒n. 天鹅绒a. 天鹅绒的on velvet 有利地位

4、gaze凝视,注视gaze at 盯住gaze out 向外注视 ...

She sat gazing out of the window.她坐着凝视着窗外。

She gazed at me in disbelief when I told her the news.
我告诉她这消息时,她以怀疑的目光注视著我。

stare at 目不转睛地看, 凝视, 盯着

glance at 瞥见,一瞥

glimpse of 瞥见,一瞥

glare at怒视gape 张口gape after 渴望得到

She gaped at the tall man, not believing that he was her younger brother.
她张嘴呆看着那个高个子,不相信他就是她的弟弟。

五、The silence was suddenly broken when a large car, with its headlights on and its horn blaring, roared down the arcade.

 1、  break silence 打破沉默

break the ice vi. 打破沉默(着手做一项须慎重处理的事)

The host tell a joke to his guest to break the ice.主人为了打破僵局,给客人讲了个笑话。

2、            horn n. 喇叭

3、            blare n. 巨响,吼叫声,颜色的鲜艳v. 高声鸣叫,大叫

A blare of sunlight flooded the room as he opened the shutters.
他打开百叶窗,满房间泻进耀眼的阳光。

4、 roar down vt. 大声压倒说话人的声音

The actor's words were roared down by applause.掌声淹没了这位演员的话。

A huge truck roared down the road.一部大卡车隆隆地驶过马路。

六、It came to a stop outside the jeweler's. One man stayed at the wheel while two others with black stockings over their faces jumped out and smashed the window of the shop with iron bars.

1、  I came to say good-bye to you.我来是向你辞行的。

All my plans came to nothing. 我的一切计划都没实现。

came to the conclusion意识到了,得出相同的结论

They came to the conclusion that they had made an unforgivable mistake.
他们得到的结论是他们犯了一个不可饶恕的错误。

came to a stop/halt/standstill: v. 停住(停顿,停滞不前)

When the bus came to a stop, some passengers got on.
当公车到一站牌时, 一些乘客上了车。

2、 at the wheel at the wheel 在……掌管下

With her at the wheel, the company began to prosper.
有了她当主管, 公司开始兴旺起来.

 Who was at the wheel when the car crashed?
汽车碰撞时开车的是谁?

3、wheel out为达到某种目的以不诚的方式做

4、  stocking长袜

5、 smash n. 破碎,大败,冲突a. 非常的,了不起的v. 粉碎,溃裂,使破产

We are determined to smash terrorism.我们一定要消灭恐怖主义。

The elephant smashed through the trees.大象在树林中横冲直撞。

I saw those ships smash on the rocks.我看到那些船都在礁石上撞得粉碎。

七、 While this was going on, Mr. Taylor was upstairs. He and his staff began throwing furniture out of the window. Chairs and tables went flying into the arcade. One of the thieves was struck by a heavy statue, but he was too busy helping himself to diamonds to notice any pain.

八、The raid was all over in three minutes, for the men scrambled back into the car and it moved off at a fantastic speed.

1、  raid n. 突然袭击,搜捕v. 劫掠,攫取,突击搜捕,袭击

air raid (空袭)

A security guard was killed in the bank raid.
这次银行抢劫案中有一名保安遇害。

The police will carry out a dawn raid.警方将在拂晓展开突然搜查。

2、 scramble n. 攀缘,争取v. 攀缘,搅炒,混杂一起

scramble for 争夺

4、            move off 离开move away搬走, 离开

Father told Harris not to give up his friends when he moved away.
父亲告诉哈里斯他搬走后不要与他的朋友们中断往来。

5、fantastic a. 极好的,难以相信的,奇异的,幻想的

He is given to telling fantastic stories about his travels in Asia.
他喜欢告诉我们他在亚洲旅游的新奇经历。

My daughter likes to describe her fantastic dreams to me.
我女儿喜欢给我讲她那些奇怪的梦

九、Just as it was leaving, Mr. Taylor rushed out and ran after it throwing ashtrays and vases, but it was impossible to stop the thieves. They had got away with thousands of pounds worth of diamonds.

1、 rush out 突然出现,冲出去

He fling his thing on and rushed out the door.
他匆匆穿上衣服,奔出门去。

2、run after 追赶,跟在后面跑She runs after every good-looking man she meets.
凡是漂亮的男子, 她见一个追一个.
